Austria A9 Highway Closed After Hazardous Material Spill Near Schlierbach

On 3 July 2026 at around 10 a.m., a Slovenian tanker truck carrying five hazardous substances (about 28 tonnes) suffered a brake‑related shift that damaged several containers on the A9 (Pyhrn) motorway near Schlierbach, Upper Austria. Roughly 40 litres of a dangerous fluid leaked. A safety zone of about 160 m was established and the Graz‑bound carriageway was completely shut.

Around 50 emergency personnel from six fire brigades, police units, ASFINAG, the Red Cross and an ADR inspection team responded. The spilled fluid was contained and diluted with water. Officials from the Upper Austrian state government reported no environmental damage. Traffic was rerouted via the B138, causing delays that extended to the Voralpenkreuz junction. The vehicle was inspected, multiple transport‑law violations were recorded, a security deposit was levied, and the truck was towed. Remaining containers were off‑loaded and removed. After cleaning the road, the A9 reopened to traffic shortly after 18:00.
