Austria addresses urban housing and town center revitalization

Experts and officials in Austria are addressing critical challenges regarding urban development, housing, and the revitalization of town centers. In Vienna, discussions at the Vienna Eco Platform focused on creating affordable, climate-resilient, and economically attractive housing. Key topics included the development of Seestadt Aspern, which integrates residential areas with schools, workplaces, and green spaces, as well as the potential for thermal renovation of existing building stocks to reduce emissions.

Simultaneously, the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO) and the city of Eisenstadt held a discussion to combat the decline of town centers and rising vacancy rates. Participants emphasized the need for synergy between municipalities, citizens, and entrepreneurs to prevent ‘ghost towns.’ Proposed solutions include diversifying the use of central spaces beyond traditional retail, such as increasing gastronomy and creating meeting points to maintain urban vitality.
