Austria adopts multi‑license gambling system and links sport funding to new tax revenues

The Austrian government’s draft gambling reform aims to end the Casinos Austria monopoly and introduce a multi‑license market from October 2027, allowing a broader range of online operators. The plan projects a roughly 25 % increase in gambling tax and concession revenues.

The reform also proposes tying the additional revenues to federal sport funding, raising the budget from €80 million to €120 million, and sets a monthly player loss limit of €1 680. WKO industry spokesperson Monika Racek welcomes market opening but criticises the timetable, the €1 680 limit and warns of possible hidden taxes, stating, “We have complied for years and are now equalised with operators who ignored judgments for years.”
