Austria adopts nationwide soil protection strategy

Federal, state and municipal leaders signed a joint declaration in Linz to launch Austria's first nationwide soil‑protection strategy. The document sets the political goal of "protecting soil and enabling the future" while allowing economic development and housing construction, but it does not contain specific quantitative targets for reducing land consumption.

Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig referenced the government programme’s aim to move toward a consumption corridor of 2.5 hectares of soil per day. A new, comparable monitoring report shows the average daily land take fell from 10.9 ha (2019‑2022) to 6.5 ha (2023‑2025), attributed to measures such as densification and strengthening of town centres.

Environmental groups criticised the declaration as largely symbolic. WWF called it a "toothless and largely empty paper" noting that the current rate of 6.5 ha per day remains more than double the 2.5 ha target, and that critics see the lack of binding targets as insufficient for genuine soil protection.
