Austria agricultural income faces crisis despite 2025 growth

The Austrian Ministry of Agriculture has released the ‘Green Report 2026’, which analyzes the economic situation of the land and forestry sectors for the year 2025. While 2025 saw an 18% increase in average income per farm to €47,102, officials warn that this was a temporary peak rather than a sustainable trend.

Agricultural Minister Norbert Totschnig described 2026 as potentially the most difficult year for farmers due to severe drought conditions. The Austrian Hail Insurance association estimated crop damages at approximately one billion euros, describing the situation as a ‘historical catastrophe’.

In response, the government has announced a €240 million drought relief package to support affected businesses. However, Josef Moosbrugger, President of the Chamber of Agriculture, noted that many farms face precarious situations and lack the necessary financial buffers for investment due to climate and market volatility.
