Austria and Bavaria confront heatwave-driven economic losses and adaptation plans

Austria faces potential billions of euros in economic losses as prolonged heatwaves reduce productivity, especially in construction and agriculture. Experts such as IHS economist Klaus Weyerstraß and WIFO economist Marcus Scheiblecker warn that high temperatures lower work capacity, increase fatigue, and disrupt supply chains. They recommend flexible working hours, cooling systems, and shaded rest areas to mitigate the impact.

In Germany’s Oberland region, officials are implementing climate‑adaptation measures to cope with rising heat and heavy rain. The KARE project, funded by the BMFTR, hosted a regional workshop on 22 July with about 70 participants. Deputy district administrator Klaus Koch highlighted the need for coordinated action among municipalities, businesses, and civil society. Researchers Anne von Streit and Annika Schubert presented risk maps and an online tool to help local authorities plan flood‑resilient infrastructure, protect vulnerable groups, and create cooling green spaces.
