Austria to Raise Traffic Fines by Up to 50% Starting 2027

The Austrian federal government announced a comprehensive overhaul of traffic penalties that will take effect on 1 January 2027. The reform introduces nationwide uniform fines for identical offences and raises most penalties, with speeding violations seeing the biggest jumps. Drivers who exceed speed limits by more than 30 km/h will face a minimum fine of €200, and the maximum fine for the most serious speed offences will increase from €5,000 to €6,000. Other common violations such as running a red light, illegal lane changes, or parking in prohibited zones will also see increases of up to 50 percent.

Transport Minister Peter Hanke said the changes aim to deter dangerous driving, which remains a leading cause of serious traffic accidents. The government estimates the new system could generate around €80 million in additional revenue each year, but emphasises that safety, not budgetary gain, is the primary motive.
