Austria and EU to implement new financial regulations in 2027
Starting January 1, 2027, Austria will implement new payroll calculation rules as part of the budget measures for 2027 and 2028. These changes will affect social security contributions, tax reliefs, and net income. Notably, unemployment insurance contribution exemptions for low-income earners will be gradually phased out. For employees hired before 2027, the contribution rate will be 0.5 percent, while new employees will face a 1 percent rate. Additionally, the maximum monthly base for calculating contributions will increase from 6,930 to 7,410 euros, and income tax thresholds will rise by approximately 2.27 percent.
Simultaneously, new European Union regulations will take effect on July 10, 2027, imposing a 10,000 euro limit on cash payments for business transactions. This restriction applies to purchases from companies and service providers, such as buying a vehicle or expensive equipment, requiring electronic transfers for amounts exceeding the limit. To prevent money laundering, businesses may request identity verification for cash transactions exceeding 3,000 euros. These rules do not apply to transactions between private individuals or standard banking activities, though banks may require proof of funds for large amounts.
