Austria and Germany pension gap widens as Austrian payouts exceed German levels

Pensioners in Austria receive significantly higher monthly payments compared to those in Germany. According to data from the Austrian Pension Insurance Fund for 2025, the average old-age pension is €2,434.77 for men and €1,705.26 for women.

In contrast, data from the German Pension Insurance (DRV) as of July 1, 2025, shows average monthly payments of €1,390 for men and €1,016 for women. The Austrian parliament has announced further increases, with a 2.7 percent rise scheduled for 2026 and a 2.95 percent increase for 2027 for total pension incomes up to €6,930.

The disparity is attributed to the structural differences in the two systems. The Austrian mandatory pension system covers nearly all employees with comparable contribution and eligibility conditions, whereas the German system utilizes separate pension schemes for different professions.
