Austria and Serbia Issue Alerts on Fake Traffic Authority Scam Messages

Austria’s toll‑road operator ASFINAG warned drivers that a wave of fraudulent e‑mails is circulating, pretending to be official notices about missing digital vignettes. The messages claim the vehicle has been caught without a valid toll sticker and demand an urgent payment for a ten‑day vignette, threatening large fines. ASFINAG advises motorists not to click any links, not to share personal or banking details, and to verify any communication through official channels.

Serbia’s Ministry of the Interior similarly cautioned citizens about fake SMS and iMessage alerts that impersonate the traffic police, offering links to “view evidence” of alleged violations and to pay fines online. The ministry stresses that traffic‑violation notices are never sent by text and that such messages often originate from foreign numbers. It urges the public to delete the messages, avoid clicking links, and report them via the national cyber‑crime platform.
