Austria announces 2026 vignette price hikes and winter tire mandates
Austria is implementing several changes regarding road usage and vehicle requirements. Starting in 2026, highway vignette prices will increase by 2.9 percent, a change linked to the consumer price index. The 2026 prices are set at 9.60 Euro for a one-day vignette, 12.80 Euro for 10 days, 32.00 Euro for two months, and 106.80 Euro for a one-year vignette. Notably, 2026 will be the final year that physical adhesive stickers are available for all durations, as the one-day vignette will transition to a digital-only format.
Additionally, a situational winter tire mandate will take effect in Austria on November 1, lasting annually until April 15. Drivers of passenger cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tons must use suitable tires—including all-season tires with M+S or snowflake markings—whenever there is snow, ice, or slush on the road. Radial tires must maintain a minimum tread depth of four millimeters. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to 10,000 Euro and potential insurance complications following accidents.
