Austria announces budget cuts for public universities
The Austrian government has finalized the funding framework for public universities for the 2028–2030 period, allocating 15.89 billion euros. While this figure is 235 million euros higher than the previously established financial framework law, it represents a nominal decrease from the 16.2 billion euros allocated for the 2025–2027 period.
When accounting for inflation, the real budget for universities is projected to decrease by nine to ten percent. The Universities Conference (uniko) has warned of “enormously negative consequences” for students and researchers, predicting that the shortfall will lead to drastic staff reductions, as personnel costs account for approximately 80 percent of university budgets.
Further financial uncertainties remain regarding how specific costs will be covered. There are conflicting reports on whether the 15.89 billion euro budget must also absorb approximately 300 million euros for physician salary increases and whether additional subsidies for the FTI Pact or the Interdisciplinary Transformation University (IT:U) Austria in Linz will be required.
