Austria backs police work‑time reform and debates electronic monitoring for dangerous offenders

On 21 May 2026 the Upper Austria (OÖ) Landtag adopted an unanimous resolution, urged by OÖVP club leader Margit Angerlehner, to revise the planned executive‑service time reform for police officers. The amendment aims to prevent higher workloads and possible pay cuts, signalling strong parliamentary support for better working conditions and fair remuneration for the police.

On 31 July 2026 ÖVP club chairman Ernst Gödl called for a change in Austrian law to allow the use of electronic monitoring—either ankle‑bracelets or GPS wrist‑bands—for individuals deemed dangerous, citing the recent terrorist attack at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day event. SPÖ women’s minister Eva‑Maria Holzleitner welcomed the proposal, describing it as a logical step in protecting public safety. The discussion coincides with broader security and asylum‑policy debates within the governing coalition.

Both measures reflect Austria’s ongoing effort to strengthen internal security and improve conditions for law‑enforcement personnel.
