Austria faces severe crop losses and water shortages amid heatwave

Extreme heat and prolonged drought across Austria have triggered widespread water scarcity and prompted conservation advice such as fixing leaks, using rain barrels and reducing household water use.

A survey of 506 farm managers conducted in June‑July 2026 found that 92.7 % expect lower yields, with an average overall reduction of about 20 % for wheat and up to 33 % for grass and fodder crops. The eastern states, Burgenland and Lower Austria, anticipate the greatest losses, while Upper Austria expects smaller declines.

The drought has also accelerated the ripening of wheat, leading to harvests starting ten to fourteen days earlier than usual in regions like Großmugl. Farmers report mixed results: some fields retain good quality despite shorter stalks, but overall yields are down and the reduced fodder threatens livestock feed supplies. Measures such as planting cover crops, careful soil handling and building irrigation infrastructure are being discussed to mitigate the impact.
