Austria begins apple and grape harvests amid weather challenges

Agricultural harvesting seasons have commenced in Austria, with both apple and grape producers facing unique challenges due to weather conditions. In Burgenland, the apple harvest has officially begun, focusing initially on early varieties around Lake Neusiedl and in southern Burgenland. Despite a vegetation period marked by frost damage in April and varying rainfall, producers report satisfactory fruit size and sugar content.

In Vienna, the grape harvest is starting approximately two weeks earlier than usual due to significant drought. The lack of water has caused grapes to ripen faster and increase in sugar content. To combat these dry conditions, approximately one-third of Vienna's vineyards are now utilizing irrigation systems, such as drip irrigation, to manage water resources effectively.
