Austria begins autumn wage negotiations in railway sector

The autumn wage negotiation round has commenced in Austria, beginning with the railway industry. Labor representatives from the vida union are advocating for higher pay to reflect record performance in the booming rail sector, alongside demands for longer rest periods and clearer competitive regulations.

Employers, represented by the WKO rail division, have emphasized that any agreement must remain economically sustainable for companies, particularly given the significant burden of rising electricity and energy costs. Both sides have expressed a commitment to constructive dialogue.

These negotiations are occurring against a backdrop of inflation, with the rolling inflation rate for the past twelve months exceeding three percent. The outcome of these discussions may be influenced by previous agreements in other sectors, such as the metal industry, where wage increases were set to follow inflation trends.
