Austria Boosts Drought Relief for Farmers and Highlights Soybean Growth

Severe drought conditions in Lower Austria have left grain and vegetable fields with dramatically reduced yields, prompting farmers to rely on costly irrigation. Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig announced government measures to support affected growers, including risk‑instrument strengthening, investment in efficient irrigation systems and continued agrarian subsidies.

At the same time, Austrian seed producer Saatbau Linz reports that soybeans have become a strategic crop amid wars, trade tensions and climate challenges. Austria harvested 272,000 tonnes of soybeans last year—one of the largest volumes in Europe—about half of which is used for food processing rather than animal feed. The low fertilizer demand of soy makes it a promising “joker” for farm profitability under current market pressures.
