North Macedonia: EU accession, tax changes, and social shifts

North Macedonia is facing several domestic developments across political, economic, and social sectors. Regarding European Union integration, discussions continue regarding the necessity of constitutional changes to advance the accession process, while some emphasize the importance of the country's security partnership with the United States through NATO.

Economically, Google is implementing Macedonian tax treatments for its services starting September 1, 2026. This may affect the final pricing of subscriptions and advertisements for both personal and business users, depending on VAT registration and tax identification.

In the social and legislative spheres, Minister of Education Vesna Janevska addressed demographic concerns, noting that 148 school facilities have closed and approximately 400 classes have been reduced. Meanwhile, the Assembly's Commission for Digital Transformation has accepted a proposal to amend the Law on Audio and Audiovisual Media Services to establish a more stable and predictable financing system for public broadcasting.

Locally, the civic initiative ‘Chance for Centar’ has launched a petition to withdraw the detailed urban plan for the Barutana area on Mount Vodno, citing concerns over deforestation, environmental impact, and potential risks of landslides and floods in Skopje.
