Austria conducts nationwide raids against Islamist extremism
Austrian security services and judicial authorities conducted a coordinated “Joint Action Day” on November 4, 2026, to combat Islamist extremism and terrorism. The operation involved the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN), nine state offices for state security and extremism combatting (LSE), and various police units, including the Cobra tactical unit.
Authorities carried out nine house searches across Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Burgenland, Vienna, Lower Austria, and Upper Austria. During these searches, investigators seized various items, including mobile phones, laptops, data carriers, knives, brass knuckles, a blank-firing pistol with a magazine, narcotics, and extremist literature. Additionally, 17 individuals were interrogated, and two temporary weapons bans were issued in Lower Austria.
In the prison system, security forces searched 235 rooms and 334 inmates across all 28 Austrian correctional facilities. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner described the operation as a preventive strike intended to identify and suppress extremist developments to ensure public safety. Justice Minister Anna Sporrer also highlighted the effective cooperation between the involved agencies.
