Austria convicts Belarusians for supplying Russian arms industry
An Austrian court has convicted two Belarusian cousins for violating export controls by supplying industrial equipment to the Russian arms industry. The defendants, who were stakeholders in a Vienna-based firm, pleaded guilty to using a network of shell companies and falsified end-user certificates to ship metalworking tools and CNC machines to Russia.
According to the Austrian interior ministry, the scheme was active since 2022 and involved the delivery of industrial goods valued at more than €3.3 million. The Austrian government stated that the equipment was used to manufacture military components, including engines for fighter jets and missiles.
The 28-year-old director of the firm received a 21-month prison sentence, with 19 months suspended. The 24-year-old woman responsible for the company's accounts received a 15-month suspended sentence. The primary defendant stated he acted under the instructions of his father and uncle, both of whom are employed by a Russian company. Both individuals declined to appeal the ruling.
