Austria digital road vignette rules and cost warnings
The Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG explains that digital 1‑day and 10‑day vignettes can be activated immediately when purchased online, while 2‑month and yearly vignettes become valid only from the 18th day after purchase. The delay reflects the EU consumer‑protection period of 14 days plus three days for postal processing.
The German motorists’ club ADAC advises drivers to avoid the pricey annual vignette (€106.80) for trips between August and November, recommending instead two 2‑month vignettes (€64 total) or short‑term 10‑day (€12.80) or daily (€9.60) options. From 1 December, Austria will switch to fully digital vignettes, ending the sale of paper stickers. ADAC also warns of counterfeit online shops that sell fake vouchers and can expose users to fraud.
Additional tolls apply on certain bridges, tunnels, and mountain passes, with fines of €200 per violation. Official digital tickets are sold through ASFINAG and recognized motor clubs.
