Austria discusses sovereign wealth fund and technological sovereignty

Austria is addressing key economic and technological challenges through new policy proposals and upcoming industry forums.

Chancellor Christian Stocker has proposed the creation of an Austrian sovereign wealth fund to secure future pensions. He suggests that approximately half of the annual profits from state holdings—estimated at around 700 million euros—should be invested long-term rather than being fully absorbed into the current federal budget. The proposal targets dividends from the state holding company ÖBAG, which manages a portfolio valued at approximately 30 billion euros including stakes in companies like OMV and Verbund.

In the technology sector, Vienna will host the Technology Talks Austria 2026 on September 10 and 11. The conference aims to discuss European technological sovereignty, industrial strength, and competitiveness. Experts will focus on translating scientific excellence into industrial leadership and strengthening strategic infrastructures and resilient supply chains.
