Austria dismantles network supplying Russian arms industry
Austrian authorities have dismantled an international sanctions-evasion network that supplied high-precision technology to the Russian arms industry. A Vienna-based company allegedly used falsified end-user certificates to export restricted industrial equipment, including CNC machines and specialized metalworking tools, to companies affiliated with the Russian state conglomerate Rostec.
Investigators found that the scheme utilized a complex web of shell companies across multiple countries, including Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Poland, and Lithuania, to mask shipments. Since 2022, industrial goods valued at more than €3.3 million have been delivered to Russian manufacturers. The diverted technology was reportedly used to produce components for military hardware, such as engines for cruise missiles and fighter jets.
A 28-year-old Belarusian national, identified as the head of the company, was arrested in May and remains in custody. During the investigation, authorities seized specialized tools and CNC machines worth approximately €140,000. Austrian intelligence officials emphasized that the diversion of high-precision European technology for the production of air-defense systems and missiles is unacceptable and vowed to continue decisive action against those attempting to circumvent EU sanctions.
