Austria Doubles Parcel Locker Count to 6,860

In 2025 Austria handled about 451.4 million parcels, a 5 % rise from the previous year, with roughly 415.6 million delivered domestically and 35.8 million sent abroad. The number of parcel lockers (Paketboxen) rose to 6,860, more than double the previous count.

Klaus M. Steinmaurer, managing director of RTR’s telecommunications and postal division, said the growth shows strong consumer acceptance and should be considered in the upcoming post‑market law and EU regulation.

The European Union introduced a €3 fee for parcels under €150 on 1 July, and plans a €2 handling charge for small parcels from third‑country senders from November. Austria is also proposing a €2 levy on online retailers with annual sales over €100 million. Post chief Walter Oblin noted a 40 % drop in Asian‑origin parcels in July, while letter volumes fell 8.5 % to about 465 million, driven by digital communication and e‑government services.
