Austria drivers warned about car‑sharing insurance costs and parking‑stop rules

A recent guide warns Austrian car owners that lending a vehicle to others can trigger higher insurance premiums and personal liability. The German Insurance Association (GDV) notes that most drivers limit coverage to themselves or a partner to keep premiums low, but adding an unregistered driver can lead to extra charges, higher risk classes, and possible contract penalties. Lenders remain liable for damages, traffic fines and may have to cover repair costs on their own vehicle.

Another advisory clarifies the distinction between stopping and parking, outlining Germany’s traffic‑sign rules that differentiate limited and absolute stop prohibitions. Drivers may stop for up to three minutes, but any longer period is considered parking. Specific circular signs with one or two red diagonal lines indicate restricted or absolute stop bans, and violations can result in fines. The Automotive Club (ADAC) stresses that every stop zone is also a parking zone, reinforcing the need for drivers to recognize and comply with these signs.
