Austria drops in public transport affordability ranking

Austria has dropped to fourth place in Greenpeace’s latest climate ticket ranking, which evaluates the affordability of public transportation across 30 European countries and capitals. After securing a podium position in 2023, the country’s decline is attributed to significant price increases for bus and rail services.

Since the last evaluation, the price of the Austrian Klimaticket has risen by 27.9 percent, while ticket prices for Wiener Linien in Vienna increased by 26 percent. These hikes are among the highest in Europe; only Germany saw a larger increase for similar national tickets. In contrast, countries such as Hungary and the Czech Republic maintained stable prices, and cities like Dublin and Oslo saw decreases in transit costs.

Greenpeace Austria expert Marc Dengler noted that while the federal government implemented a fuel price brake to address the energy crisis, no similar measure has been applied to public transport costs.
