Austria earthquake strikes near Neunkirchen
A light earthquake occurred in Lower Austria during the night of Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The tremor, measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter approximately four kilometers southwest of Neunkirchen.
Residents in the municipalities of Ternitz and Seebenstein reported feeling slight vibrations. Experts from GeoSphere Austria classified the event as a light earthquake and stated that no structural damage to buildings is expected, as the magnitude remains well below the threshold for causing damage.
The Neunkirchen district is located in one of the more seismically active regions of Lower Austria, particularly within the southern Vienna Basin and the Semmering-Wechsel area, where minor tremors occur periodically.
