Austria ecological studies report on soil fauna and amphibian habitats

Recent ecological studies in Austria have examined various aspects of biodiversity and environmental impact. In South Tyrol, research conducted by the Laimburg Research Centre investigated how organic fertilization, including manure and slurry, affects the abundance and diversity of soil meso- and macrofauna in permanent meadows. The study found that neither the amount of nutrient input nor the specific type of manure had a consistent effect on the diversity of these organisms.

In the Tyrolean Inn Valley, a survey of amphibian populations focused on Rana temporaria and Bufo bufo. The study found that these species were present in 41.6% of surveyed water bodies, with higher occurrence near forested areas. The research highlighted that roads and highways cause significant habitat fragmentation, necessitating conservation measures to maintain connectivity between breeding sites and forests.

Additionally, microbiological research has identified a new anaerobic fungal strain, SD2E, isolated from a Degu. This strain shows a strong preference for consuming cellulose and starch, offering potential insights into biotechnological biomass conversion.
