Austria education reform: ÖVP and SPÖ disagree on school models

Political parties in Austria are divided over proposed reforms to the national education system. The ÖVP and SPÖ hold differing views on key issues, including the expansion of all-day schools and the implementation of a common school model for children up to age 14. While the SPÖ advocates for widespread all-day schooling, the ÖVP emphasizes existing school formats and improvements in kindergarten and primary education, including a second mandatory kindergarten year.

Discussions have also touched upon the potential shortening of summer holidays. The ÖVP has expressed openness to this proposal, whereas the SPÖ argues that shorter breaks alone would not resolve issues regarding childcare and work-life balance.

Beyond political debate, educators and commentators highlight systemic challenges within the Austrian school system. These include significant deficits in reading and mathematics competence, the need for better integration of artificial intelligence in learning, and the impact of social inequality. Reports indicate that students' social backgrounds and parental education levels continue to create substantial disparities in educational outcomes, with some students expressing a lack of engagement with the current curriculum.
