Austria egg consumption hits record high amid rising feed costs
Egg consumption in Austria has reached an all-time high, with individuals consuming an average of 246 eggs per year. According to AMA-Marketing, demand in the food retail sector has increased by 25 percent since 2015. Approximately 82 percent of consumers prioritize regional origin, with a growing preference for organic and free-range products, which accounted for over half of supermarket sales in 2025.
To meet this demand and prevent future shortages, the domestic poultry industry is expanding production. Investments are being made in approximately 500,000 new stall spaces by the end of 2027, focusing primarily on organic and free-range farming. The egg industry currently supports 12,800 jobs and generates a gross value added of approximately one billion euros.
Despite rising demand, consumers can expect moderate price increases in the coming weeks. Günther Wenninger, chairman of the producer group EZG Frischei, anticipates a rise of one to two cents per egg, or ten to twenty cents per ten-pack. This adjustment is driven by higher feed costs resulting from a summer drought that reduced fodder yields. Producers noted that these price hikes only partially offset the increased costs of animal feed.
