Austria electric car registrations reach record 24% share in first half of 2026
Austria recorded 40,060 new battery‑electric passenger cars in the first six months of 2026, bringing the share of pure‑electric vehicles to 24.3 % of all new passenger‑car registrations and placing them almost on par with petrol‑powered cars (24.6 %). Overall new car registrations rose 15 % year‑on‑year to 164,529, with two‑thirds of the registrations belonging to companies, public authorities or other legal entities.
June alone saw 8,993 battery‑electric cars registered – a 44 % increase over June 2025 – pushing the monthly electric‑car market share above 26 % for the first time. Across Austria, alternative‑drive vehicles accounted for two‑thirds of all registrations, while diesel and diesel‑hybrid sales continued to fall.
In Carinthia (Kärnten), the electric‑vehicle boom was especially pronounced. The region registered 1,951 new EVs in the first half of the year, a 31 % rise over the same period last year, with the share of electric cars among new registrations reaching 21.7 %. The district of Klagenfurt‑Land led the region with 28.9 % of its new cars being electric, followed closely by Völkermarkt at 28.8 %.
