Austria expands energy infrastructure financing and storage projects
The Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance and Oesterreichische Kontrollbank AG (OeKB) are expanding financial support for energy infrastructure. New measures will extend funding opportunities to smaller distribution networks and storage solutions with investment volumes starting from 2 million euros. This follows a previous program for large-scale investments exceeding 100 million euros. Together, these programs provide a total volume of 2 billion euros in guarantees and financing to support the transition to renewable energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
In the Burgenland region, Burgenland Energie AG has broken ground on a major battery storage project in Nickelsdorf. The facility will feature over 200 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, complementing existing wind and solar installations. This project aims to make renewable energy available during peak demand periods in the morning and evening.
Additionally, wind power expansion continues in Lower Austria through 'repowering' projects. In Groß Sierning, older wind turbines are being replaced by larger, more efficient models to increase energy yield without requiring new wind farm locations. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to increase domestic renewable electricity production and reduce reliance on expensive energy imports.
