Austria faces debate over proposed sugar tax on beverages

Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig, a State Secretary from the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), has proposed a new tax on sugary beverages. The proposal has met significant opposition from industry representatives and economic organizations.

The Austrian Food Industry Association and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) warn that such a tax would increase food prices, further weakening consumer purchasing power during a period of high inflation and energy costs. Industry experts argue that the tax would impact an entire value chain, including beet farmers, the sugar industry, and beverage manufacturers.

Concerns have also been raised regarding food security and regional employment. Austria currently operates only one sugar factory, which is vital for processing domestic sugar beets and maintaining self-sufficiency in sugar production. Additionally, data indicates that sugar consumption in Austria has already decreased by approximately 30% since the mid-1990s, and sugar content in beverages has been reduced by about one-third over the last two decades without the need for taxation.
