Austria faces delays in security export law amid defense industry expansion

The implementation of a new security export law in Austria has stalled, despite efforts to streamline the export of defense and dual-use goods. The proposed legislation aimed to increase legal certainty and accelerate approval processes through digitalization and centralized ministerial competence. However, government sources indicate that political parties SPÖ and NEOS have not responded to the draft since May, and recent negotiation meetings have been canceled.

This legislative delay occurs as the European defense industry undergoes significant restructuring. Companies such as Hensoldt are doubling radar production targets, and Steyr Motors is reconfiguring production to meet rising demand. While the Austrian defense sector saw approved exports of 3.2 billion euros last year, industry leaders note that bureaucracy and slow permit processes continue to hinder growth. For example, Steyr Arms reportedly lost a significant contract from Tunisia due to untimely export approvals.
