Austria agriculture faces dramatic harvest collapse due to drought

Record drought in Austria has caused a dramatic collapse in autumn harvests, with losses exceeding previous expectations. According to the Austrian Chamber of Agriculture, several key crops have seen massive declines compared to the five-year average.

Potato yields are expected to drop by between 50 and 70 percent, a situation described as “dramatic.” Other significant losses include soybean production, which may fall by over 50 percent, and grain corn, which is expected to decrease by nearly 30 percent. Sugar beet production is also heavily impacted, with potential decreases of up to 52 percent, exacerbated by the closure of the Agrana sugar factory in Leopoldsdorf.

Other affected crops include sunflowers, oil pumpkins, and soft wheat. The drought has also severely impacted grassland, leading to fodder shortages that may force farmers to reduce livestock numbers or purchase external feed.
