Austria faces extreme heatwaves and devastating mudslides

Austria is experiencing extreme weather patterns characterized by intense heatwaves and severe flooding and mudslides. In Styria, temperatures are expected to remain high, with officials warning that the region may break heat records. Graz has already recorded 37 days with temperatures exceeding 30°C this year, and meteorologists predict the 2003 record of 41 heat days could be surpassed. The prolonged heat has dried out soil and vegetation, significantly increasing the risk of forest fires.

Simultaneously, heavy rainfall following intense heat has triggered devastating mudslides and floods in the Alpine regions, particularly in Salzburg and Tyrol. In the Zillertal and Gastein valleys, mudslides destroyed bridges and damaged houses, leading to evacuations. Geologists have pointed to climate change as a primary driver, noting that the melting of local glaciers has left behind polished rock surfaces that can no longer absorb water like ice once did, causing runoff to transform small streams into destructive torrents.
