Austria faces extreme weather shifts and new climate strategy

The city of Dornbirn has introduced a new climate change adaptation strategy to combat rising temperatures and extreme weather events. The plan focuses on mitigating heat, managing water, increasing greenery, and improving flood protection. Key measures include installing photovoltaic systems on urban roofs, increasing shade through trees, and reducing sealed surfaces to allow for better rainwater absorption.

Local data indicates a significant warming trend in the Dornbirn Rhine Valley, with average annual temperatures rising from 9.75 degrees Celsius between 1971 and 2000 to 10.61 degrees between 1991 and 2020. Additionally, the number of days exceeding 30 degrees Celsius has increased from an average of 3.4 to nearly nine days per year.

Simultaneously, a cold front is moving across Austria, bringing a shift in weather patterns. While eastern regions remain warm, western parts of the country are experiencing a drop in temperature accompanied by thunderstorms, heavy rain, and potential hail. Meteorologists from Geosphere Austria and the Austrian Storm Center (UWZ) warn of gusty winds and localized heavy thunderstorms spreading from Vorarlberg toward the eastern regions.
