Austria faces heightened terror risk after Berlin pride parade attack

A terrorist attack on Berlin's Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade killed one woman and injured 29 people, most of whom are no longer in life‑threatening condition. The assault has been linked to influence from the Islamic State (IS) and raises concerns about similar incidents in neighboring countries.

Terror‑expert Gvido Steinberg says Austria's security situation mirrors Germany's and warns that a comparable attack could occur "at any moment" in Austria. He notes past plots targeting a pride parade in Vienna and points to a rise in jihadist numbers and refugee flows from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan as factors heightening the threat. Steinberg urges stricter border controls, more effective intelligence services and a boost in monitoring personnel to improve domestic security.

The expert calls for stronger preventive measures across Austria and Germany, emphasizing tighter entry controls, enhanced surveillance capacities and increased resources for security agencies to better track high‑risk individuals.
