Austria Faces Major Cuts to Federal Cultural Budget

From 2027, Austria’s federal cultural budget could undergo substantial reductions, a development that would severely impact the independent cultural sector. Yvonne Gimpel, executive director of IG Kultur Österreich, warned that cultural work is a vital component of a functioning democracy and urged proactive defence against the cuts.

The association is promoting a new baseline data collection to quantify the contribution of free cultural work, aiming to supply solid evidence for policymakers and strengthen the sector’s position in political debates.
