Austria agriculture faces 1 billion euro drought damage
Austria is facing a historical drought catastrophe, with agricultural damages estimated at approximately 1 billion euros as of August 10, 2026. The Austrian Hail Insurance (Österreichische Hagelversicherung) reports that the scale of loss is unprecedented, nearly equaling the total damages from the previous ten years combined.
Key crops affected include grassland, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, pumpkins, and soy, with average yield losses reaching roughly 30 percent. Grassland has seen losses as high as 45 percent. The insurer expects to cover approximately 400 million euros in claims, noting that 80 percent of arable land and 40 percent of grassland are insured against drought.
Meteorological data from Geosphere Austria indicates that the current period is the driest comparable period in the country since at least 1961. Experts attribute the severity and increasing frequency of such extreme weather events to human-induced climate change.
In response, Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig has announced plans for an aid package to support farming families, including potential measures like subsidized loans and relief for uninsured farmers. However, discussions with the Ministry of Finance continue regarding the budget and the sustainability of such support.
