Austria agriculture faces 1 billion euro drought damage
Austria's agricultural sector is facing a massive economic crisis due to a historic drought, with damages estimated at approximately 1 billion euros. The Austrian Hail Insurance (Österreichische Hagelversicherung) reports that this single event nearly equals the total damages from the previous ten years combined. The drought has caused an average yield loss of 30 percent across all crops, with grassland suffering the most at a 45 percent loss.
Meteorological data from Geosphere Austria indicates that the current period is the driest comparable period in the country since at least 1961. The lack of precipitation and extreme heatwaves have affected all regions, with Lower Austria bearing a significant portion of the losses, estimated at 400.5 million euros.
In response, Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig is negotiating an aid package to support farming families. While 80 percent of arable land and 40 percent of grassland are covered by insurance, many farmers remain unprotected. Political debate is intensifying as the Ministry of Finance warns against uncontrolled spending, while agricultural leaders demand urgent relief to ensure the survival of many family-run farms.
