Austria faces ongoing water scarcity following record heatwave

Following an exceptionally hot and dry summer in 2026, Austria continues to deal with the consequences of drought and heat. While autumn rains have arrived, scientists warn that these extreme weather patterns are not isolated incidents but part of a broader trend.

In some Austrian municipalities, water supplies remain under close observation. Experts emphasize the importance of conscious water consumption, noting that the average Austrian uses 130 liters of water per day, though only three liters are required for drinking and cooking.

Practical conservation measures include repairing dripping faucets, which can save up to 3,000 liters annually, opting for showers instead of full baths, and using rainwater for gardening. Additionally, using washing and dishwashing machines only when full and being mindful of the water required to produce food and clothing are recommended to mitigate the impact of ongoing water scarcity.
