Austria faces regional medical supply challenges
Regional healthcare challenges are emerging in parts of Austria, specifically regarding the availability of general practitioners and specialists.
In the Lilienfeld district, local politicians have met with Social and Health Minister Korinna Schumann to discuss the long-term security of medical care. The discussions focused on the difficulty of filling general practitioner positions and specialist vacancies, particularly in rural areas. In Hohenberg, for example, local leaders are seeking permanent solutions to ensure medical coverage following physician retirements to maintain quality of life for elderly residents and families.
In the Feldkirch district, a shortage of contracted ophthalmologists has been reported. Currently, two of six contracted positions are vacant, and a third physician is expected to transition to a private practice model in January. While the Medical Chamber maintains that there is no overall shortage of specialists—noting that appointments are available through private practitioners—the lack of contracted doctors remains a regional concern.
