Austria faces rising labor costs and EU pay transparency mandates

Austria is facing increasing pressure regarding labor costs and wage transparency. According to data from the Institute for Macroeconomics and Conjucture Research, Austria's private sector labor costs reached 46.30 euros per hour, the fifth highest in the European Union. The increase in Austrian labor costs was 4.50 percent, exceeding both the German rate of 3.40 percent and the EU average of 4.30 percent.

Simultaneously, the implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive (2023/970) is approaching, with a deadline for national integration by 2027. This directive requires companies to disclose salaries and justify gender-based pay differences. Analysis from Eurogroup Consulting suggests that while men and women are affected by pay gaps at similar frequencies, women often face more significant disparities and are frequently underrepresented in higher-paying leadership roles.
