Austria faces significant gender gaps in pay and pensions

In Austria, significant gender disparities persist in income, employment, and financial literacy. The gender pay gap in 2024 stood at 17.6 percent, which is notably higher than the European Union average of 11.1 percent.

Employment patterns also differ significantly; in 2025, 49.8 percent of employed women in Austria worked part-time, compared to 14 percent of men. This trend contributes to a substantial pension gap. In 2024, the average monthly gross old-age pension for women was 1,563 euros, while men received 2,620 euros, resulting in a pension gap of 40.3 percent.

Data from the Austrian National Bank indicates that measured financial knowledge among women was 8.4 percent lower than that of men, with financial well-being also trailing by 8.9 percent. These statistics highlight challenges regarding financial confidence and the impact of unpaid care work and career interruptions on long-term financial security for women.
