Austria federal culture budget to decrease in 2027

The Austrian federal government plans to reduce its culture budget by 3.3 percent in 2027, dropping from 629.8 million to 608.7 million euros. This reduction represents a loss of approximately 21 million euros.

While budgets for states and municipalities have not yet been finalized, officials in Vorarlberg cities, including Feldkirch, Dornbirn, Hohenems, Bludenz, Bregenz, and Lustenau, anticipate no increases. Local culture department heads indicate that the primary focus must shift from innovation to preservation. Officials from Dornbirn and Hohenems noted that while they may maintain current levels, there will be no special grants or additional project funding.

Mirjam Steinbock of IG Kultur Vorarlberg warned of potential “culture cannibalism,” a situation where cultural institutions are forced to compete aggressively for dwindling resources. Local officials emphasized that maintaining existing structures and supporting volunteers will be critical as financial constraints tighten.
