Austria fossil CO2 emissions fell 4.3% in 2024
Fossil CO2 emissions in Austria decreased by 4.3 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the Luftemissionsrechnung 2024 report by Statistik Austria. Total emissions from fossil sources fell to 40.97 million tons, down from 42.83 million tons in 2023.
Several factors contributed to this decline, including reduced diesel consumption, mild weather conditions, and weakened industrial production. Specifically, emissions from private households dropped by 4.7 percent, while emissions from the economy decreased by 4.2 percent.
Compared to 2008 levels, fossil CO2 emissions from the economy are now 26.8 percent lower. Additionally, emissions from process-related industrial sources, such as the production of cement, steel, and chemicals, fell by 2.7 percent compared to the previous year.
