Austria fuel prices could rise by nearly 1 euro per liter

A study by the Economica institute, commissioned by the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ), warns that fuel prices in Austria could see significant increases by 2035. According to the findings, diesel could become 95 cents more expensive per liter, while gasoline could rise by 86 cents per liter.

The projected price hikes are linked to the proposed Renewable Energy in Transport Act (EEG-V). This legislation aims to accelerate Austria’s transition to climate neutrality by 2040, which is ten years ahead of the European Union’s 2050 target. The plan seeks to increase the share of renewable energy in transport to 18 percent by 2027, 35 percent by 2030, and 65 percent by 2035.

The WKÖ warns that this rapid transition could impose heavy costs on drivers and transport companies. The study compares these potential costs against a scenario where Austria follows standard EU rules without additional tightening. The calculations are based on 2026 price levels and do not account for general inflation.
