Austria gas station fines target non-purchasing drivers

Motorists traveling to Austria are facing significant fines, sometimes reaching 10,000 CZK, for brief stops at gas stations without making a purchase.

Station owners utilize automated camera systems at entrances and exits to record license plates. If the system detects that no transaction occurred at the register, the driver is flagged for unauthorized use of private property. Because gas station premises are private property, entering the area constitutes an agreement to the owner's rules, which include the requirement to purchase goods or fuel.

Authorities in Austria provide vehicle owner information to legal representatives upon suspicion of property trespass, allowing fines to be sent directly to the owner's home address, regardless of who was driving at the time.
