A severe summer drought has hit central Europe, sharply reducing harvests in Austria and Germany. In Austria, the grain harvest fell to about 2.5 million tonnes, 14 % below the five‑year average, while the Burgenland region recorded a grain yield of only 219 000 tonnes – the lowest level in 56 years. The Austrian Agrarmarkt reported that wheat and other cereals also suffered significant yield drops, and the Ministry warned of water‑supply stress for farms.

In Germany, the German Raiffeisenverband cut its grain‑harvest outlook to 42.7 million tonnes, a 5.6 % decline, and the potato crop is expected to be weaker with smaller tubers and tighter market supplies for French‑fries production. Vegetable prices have risen and the availability of larger potatoes for processing has fallen. Farmers cite higher input costs, reduced feed supplies and rising food prices.

Both countries’ agricultural organisations are calling for urgent drought‑relief measures, including subsidies, credit support and EU crisis‑fund assistance, to protect farm incomes and food security.
