Austria health insurance deficit projected to nearly halve in 2026

Austrian health insurance providers have significantly reduced their projected deficit for 2026. According to preliminary financial statements, the expected deficit has been nearly halved from 204.8 million euros to 111.2 million euros compared to forecasts from three months ago.

Individual performance varies among the three main providers. The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) expects a deficit of 151.5 million euros, down from a previous estimate of 217.8 million euros. The Insurance Institution for Public Servants, Railways and Mining (BVAEB) projects a loss of 65.1 million euros, an improvement from the previous 102.7 million euro forecast. Conversely, the Social Insurance Institution for the Self-Employed (SVS) is the only provider expecting a profit, though its projected earnings have decreased slightly to 105.4 million euros from 115.6 million euros.

While the outlook for the coming years remains downward, the projections have improved across the board. For instance, the projected deficit for 2027 has been revised to 188.2 million euros from 427.4 million euros. Peter McDonald, head of the social insurance umbrella organization, stated that efforts have been focused on moving from a billion-euro deficit toward a turnaround, maintaining a goal of a balanced budget.
